Sri Lankan court grants bail to Presidential bodyguard charged with pl

Sri Lanka's appeal court has granted bail to President Chandrika Kumaratunga's top bodyguard who was arrested three weeks ago over an alleged plot to kill one of her main opponents.

The court ordered the release of Nihal Karunaratne, the director of the elite Presidential Security Division, directing him to report to police once a month.

Court officials said the ruling was given hours after a lower court ordered Karunaratne be remanded for one more month for his alleged role in threatening a fellow officer with death.

It is the first time such a senior aide of a Sri Lankan leader faces criminal charges.

He is accused of issuing death threats against a senior police officer who was investigating an assassination attempt on former Kumaratunga confidante S.B. Dissanayake just before parliamentary elections in December.
