Anti Japanese protests in China over JapanesePM's visit to shrine Anti-Japanese protests have escalated across China in reaction to the visit to a controversial shrine by Japan's prime minister. Labor unions and political groups marched to the Japanese consulate in Hong Kong to deliver a letter denouncing Junichiro Koizumi's visit to the Yasukuni shrine. Japanese officials refused to receive the protest letters, which demanded an apology from Japan for wartime military atrocities. On the Chinese mainland, the issue has dominated the front pages and news bulletins throughout the day. Overnight China's foreign ministry summoned Japan's ambassador to China and lodged a formal protest. Chinese officials say the Japanese leader's visit has seriously damaged his country's standing among fellow Asian countries, but disputed suggestions specific retaliatory action would be taken.
