Taiwan blames weather and flight crew for Singapore Airlines crash
Taiwan investigators have blamed bad weather and the flight crew for the crash of a Singapore Airlines plane on takeoff in Taipei in 2000.
In its final findings on the crash that killed 83 people, the Taiwan cabinet's Aviation Safety Council identified eight "probable causes" related to the flight crew and a typhoon at the time.
It said the flight crew on the Boeing 747 did not make full use of information such as the airport navigation chart, aircraft heading references, runway and taxiway signs and markings.
It said lighting and signs at Taipei's Chiang Kai-shek international airport fell below international standards, but that was not sufficient to have caused the flight crew's lack of awareness.
The plane was bound for Los Angeles and had 179 people on board.
It was Singapore Airline's first fatal crash.
