Witness in Suharto trial confesses to accepting a bribe
A second witness in the murder and illegal weapons trial of Tommy Suharto, has confessed to accepting a bribe to retract an earlier deposition to police that weighted against the ex-dictator's son.
A Jakarta police spokesman said a security guard was detained because he was proven to have given false testimony in court.
The guard had admitted that Tommy's lawyer paid him 100 dollars to retract his statement to police and to claim his signature on the police statement was forged.
Tatang Somantri is one of three security guards who told the Central Jakarta District Court on April 10 that police had intimidated them into identifying Tommy as the owner of a stash of firearms found in an apartment he allegedly used.
Tommy is charged with with illegal possession of weapons and with ordering the killing of a judge who sentenced him to jail on the graft conviction.
