UN chief calls for an extension to military role in East Timor
The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is recommending that the United Nations keep a military force in East Timor for up to two years after the territory becomes independent May 20.
In a report to the Security Council, he says it's essential to preserve gains made during the truly historic mandate of the UN administration in the territory over the past two and a half years.
He says East Timor is at peace and fundamental government structures are in place, but the territory is desperately poor, and anti-independence militias in Indonesian West Timor remain a threat.
Mr Annan recommended establishing a new UN support mission in East Timor, to be known as UNMISET, in place of the transitional administration set up in November 1999 and whose mandate expires on independence day.
He has already named India's ambassador to the UN, Kamalesh Sharma, to head the new mission.
