China talks of economic benefits of WTO entry

China's vice president Hu Jintao says the country's entry into the World Trade Organisation will open up trade opportunities worth at least 1.5 trillion US dollars in the next five years.

Mr Hu made the comments in Malaysia, on the first leg of a three-nation tour that will also take him to the United States.

In an address to a public forum in Kuala Lumpur, he said China's rising economic might would provide a broad market and more abundant business opportunities to the rest of Asia.

He said China's service industry would also be opened gradually to foreign investors, and China itself will increase its investment in other Asian countries.

The vice-president is widely tipped to be China's next leader.
