Ban on ABC website in China lifted

China's internet surveillance units have lifted their ban on the website of Radio Australia's parent organisation, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

China correspondent Tom O'Byrne reports the development follows complaints by A-B-C Management in Australia, and Australian diplomats in Beijing.

The week-long ban on the ABC site ended earlier today. Officials with China's foreign ministry and the public security bureau would not comment on the development, nor did they admit that they knew anything about the ban in the first place. The ABC website had been impossible to see from inside China for the past week. It was one of hundreds of foreign news and information sites caught up in an ongoing crackdown on sensitive content by Chinese authorities. An official of the Australian Embassy in Beijing says the issue was raised during routine talks with the foreign ministry.
