Singapore's senior minister leaves for United States
Singapore's Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew has left for the United States on a week-long visit during which includes a meeting with President George W. Bush.
Mr Lee will also hold meetings with Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.
The 78-year-old Senior Minister is the founding father of modern Singapore and the island-nation's first prime minister.
Widely regarded as an elder statesman for Southeast Asia, he has been sought for his views on regional political and economic developments.
In March, Mr Lee said Southeast Asia must act to deny September 11 terror suspect Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network a safe haven as its members flee from bases in Afghanistan.
Mr Lee warned that if al-Qaeda operatives found a haven in the region they would be able to attack US missions, military personnel, ships and aircraft.
