American presence in Central Asia will not destabilize region
A Russian foreign ministry official says an American military presence in Central Asia will not destabilize the region.
Spokesman, Alexander Yakovenko, says the involvement of "extraregional forces in the affairs of the region are no cause for any local or interstate tensions.
He was reacting to criticism from Kyrgyzstan that the Americans want to sap the influence of China in the region and provoke the break-up of the Shanghai group, in which Russia and China are the main players.
Apart from Kyrgyzstan, China and Russia, the Shanghai group includes three other ex-Soviet republics in Central Asia - Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. At least 1,500 US-led troops are currently stationed as part of the war against terrorism in Afghanistan, with up to 5,000 coalition soldiers expected to be based there eventually.
