Indonesian government to curb imports of rice
Indonesia's government is considering introducing a seasonal tariff on rice imports and quarantine requirements from next year to help curb rice imports.
The government has come under mounting pressure to deal with rice farmers' complaints of low prices, particularly during harvests, which they blame on the abundance of rice imports.
Indonesia, which was self-sufficient in rice -- the country's staple food -- for over a decade, began substantial imports in 1998 when the rice trade was liberalised under an economic reform program.
Under the new proposal the government will impose a high tariff during harvest time and lower it during the dry season.
Rice imports will only be able to enter the country through selected ports where they will have to go through a quarantine centre.
