Jakarta flood victims sue government over losses

An Indonesian court has begun hearing a class action by hundreds of Jakarta flood victims against President Megawati Sukarnoputri the capital's governor Sutiyoso, and the governor of neighbouring West Java.

The victims, represented by 15 plaintiffs and 32 lawyers, are demanding compensation for material losses and for repairs to facilities damaged when floodwaters swamped larege areas of the capital in late January and early February.

At least 67 people died from diseases contracted during the severe flooding.

The victims are also suing the authorities for failing to take emergency action as floodwaters engulfed parts of the city and its satellite towns, forcing some 330,000 residents to abandon their homes.

Five groups are being represented in the suit: those who lost family members in the floods, those who contracted illnesses, those who lost property, those whose property was damaged and those who lost their means of livelihood.
