More than 500 Maoist rebels killed in Nepal

Nepalese authorities say more than 550 Maoist rebels have been killed in a huge offensive by the police and army over the past three days.

An official from the home ministry said the deaths came as security forces targetted a camp in the west of the country where around 800 guerrillas were gathered for training.

The official estimated the casualties in surface and air attacks at more than 550.

The figure is an increase on the numbers quoted on Saturday.

The Maoists have been waging an armed insurgency for six years to topple the constitutional monarchy.
