Washington wants to boost Nepal's military forces in Maoist fight
The Bush administration has reponded to the upsurge in Maoist activity in Nepal by asking Congress to grant 40 million dollars in military aid to the government.
A presidential spokesman says Washington supports the right of Nepal to safeguard its citizens against the guerrillas within the framework of its own constitution.
Nepal has asked for help from the United States and other countries, including Britain and Russia, after launching a crackdown on the mounting Maoist insurgency.
The request was placed in the context of the US campaign against global terrorism, styling the Maoist rebels as terrorists out to overturn its constitution.
At least a dozen US military experts have been touring far western parts of Nepal where the insurgency broke out in 1996.
