Nepalese troops and Maoist guerillas locked in a fierce battle
Details are emerging of a battle between Nepalese troops and Moaist guerillas in which an estimated 900 people have been killed.
The fierce fighting in the Nepalese Maoists' mountain stronghold of Rolpa has been going on for several days about 298 kilometers west of the capital Kathmandu.
State radio says that 250 rebels and 104 security personnel were killed in the battle.
It claims that several villagers, used by the Maoists as human shields, have also been killed.
An estimated 600 Maoists had already died in the government's assault, most of them after security forces stormed their training camp.
The Maoists run a virtual parallel state around Rolpa, where they control their own judicial system and have promised radical redistribution of wealth.
