Cambodian authorities vow to pursue former Khmer Rouge commander
Cambodian authorities have vowed to pursue and arrest former Khmer Rouge commander, General Sam Bith, over the slayings of three Western backpackers in 1994.
Co-defence minister, Tea Banh, said the military and police were yet to confirm Sam Bith's whereabouts since reports first emerged from Australia that he had set up house in western Cambodia about two weeks ago.
The minister said he had been unable to confirm the authenticity of the report but investigations would continue.
Sam Bith, a former deputy to Khmer Rouge military chief Ta Mok, went into hiding in 1999 after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Authorities claimed they could not find him.
He is wanted in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Australian David Wilson, Briton Mark Slator and Frenchman Jean-Michel Braquet.
Colonel Chhouk Rin was arrested and jailed for ordering the train ambush that began the kidnap ordeal but he was released after an appeal.
General Nuon Paet was charged and jailed for life for his part in the killings in May 1999.
