Warm White House welcome for Malaysian Prime Minister

President George W. Bush has set aside past differences and warmly welcomed Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to the White House as an ally in the war against terrorism.

It was Mr Mahathir's first visit to the Oval Office since 1994.

Malaysia earned harsh U.S. criticism for the 1998 jailing of former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who was convicted of sodomy and abuse of power in trials that human rights groups condemned as politically driven.

President Bush said his most important job was to secure the US homeland, and Mr Mahathir's visit was very important in that respect.
