East Timorese fisheries officers complete training in Australia

Three East Timorese fisheries officers are about leave Australia for Dili where they will continue to measure fish stocks in the local harbour.

The men came to the northern Australian city of Darwin to be trained in collating the field data they have been collecting for the past year.

The Executive Director of Fisheries in Australia's Northern Territory - Richard Sellers - says fish stocks in Dili Harbour are under considerable pressure.

"When the Indonesians left, a lot of the infrastructure sort of broke down and the only place a lot of the subsistence and low level commercial fishermen could sell their catch was at Dili itself. But they couldn't transport it from villages too far away from Dili, so instead of not catching anything, they shifted their whole operations to Dili Harbour."
