Taiwan accuses Beijing of election meddling
Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian has accused Beijing of attempting to manipulate the outcome of the island's electoral process.
The Taiwanese leader's remarks have beeen carried in the latest issue of the German magazine Der Spiegel.
He's quoted as saying China has been backing certain candidates with money, and is attempting to put pressure on the Taiwanese business community not to support his ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
Mr Chen has infuriated China with policies seen as promoting Taiwanese independence.
The president also says it's unlikely the forthcoming changes to the leadership in Beijing will see improved relations across the Taiwan strait. But he says he's ready to continue dialogue with China, even though he rejects Beijing's "one China" policy and insists on the sovereign independence of Taiwan.
