Taiwan asks to join International Civil Aviation Organisation
Taiwan has asked for the first time to join the International Civil Aviation Organsiation after releasing a report into the crash of a Singapore Airlines jumbo jet which killed 83 people.
Taiwan's independent Aviation Safety Council has asked the Organisation to consider granting Taipei official observer status in a bid to enhance aviation safety on the island.
Taipei is excluded from the ICAO, a sub-organisation of the United Nations as the island is not a member of the United Nations. The request came after the Aviaiton Safety Council released its final investigation report into the disaster of a Boeing 747-400 flight bound for Los Angeles, which crashed after trying to take off from Chiang Kai-shek airport in October 31, 2000.
The report pointed out that the pilots had used a closed runway resulting in the tradgedy which left 83 passengers and crew dead.
