Japan offers drought stricken Taiwan water
Japan's southernmost province of Okinawa has offered neighbouring Taiwan tonnes of free water as it suffers its worst drought in years.
The foreign ministry says Taiwan is considering the offer but wants to monitor water supply levels and rainfall this month before deciding whether to accept.
Authorities in Okinawa, the closest Japanese province to Taiwan, say they could provide 3,000 tonnes of water daily to Taiwan for two months. Anti-drought and water rationing measures have been imposed in some areas of Taiwan, including the greater Taipei area, northern Taoyuan county and southern Chiayi county.
Weather forecasters expect more rainfall next week which could ease the situation.
