US soldier killed in Afghanistan

A US special forces soldier has been killed in eastern Afghanistan when his patrol was attacked.

The US Central Command confirmed the soldier was killed in a firefight.

US, British and Australian forces have been patrolling the rugged mountains of eastern Afghanistan searching for remaining al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

The soldier's death is the first US combat loss since eight troops were killed in March in a massive air assault on the Shahi Kot valley south of Gardez in Paktia province.
