Environmental groups concerned over Japan's whaling plans

Environmental groups sat they're worried Japan has the numbers to take a significant step towards a resumption of commercial whaling.

Tokyo correspondent Mark Simkin reports.

The International Whaling Commission is holding its annual general meeting. This year's venue is the Japanese whaling port of Shimonoseki. The host country has made no secret of its aim...it wants the meeting to vote for a resumption of full commercial whaling. It's unlikely Japan will have the numbers of win that debate, but it might come close. Anti-whaling countries such as Australia believe Japan will -- for the first time in decades -- command a majority of votes at the meeting. That will give the host country a significant say over the world's whaling policy.
