Japan accuses New Zealand of hypocrisy over whaling ban

Japan is targeting New Zealand, in its bid to win a resumption of commercial whaling.

Thousands of pamphlets criticising New Zealand's stance have been distributed at the International Whaling Commission meeting in the Japanese port of Shimonoseki, as Mark Simkin reports.

The Commission is also set to debate an Australian proposal for a South Pacific whale sanctuary, when it resumes discussions later this morning.

The proposal is being pushed by New Zealand and Australia .. who are arguing that the South Pacific contains critical whale breeding grounds and migratory routes.

The glossy documents feature pictures of cute lambs under the heading "What would you do if Japanese people told New Zealanders no more Sunday lamb roasts?" The document goes on to say that Japan is vital to New Zealand's economy and to accuse of New Zealand of trying to impose its cultural values on other countries.
