Indian PM offers condolences over killing of Kashmir separatist leader
A Kashmiri separatist leader has been shot dead in Indian Kashmir.
The assasination occured just hours before the arrival of Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, for a three day visit to the tense and divided state.
The Indian Prime Minister offered his condolences to the family and said the incident would effect but not stop the peace process in Kashmir.
Witnesses say Abdul Gani Lone was shot while attending a meeting in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir state. Mr Lone was seen as a moderate among the separatists fighting Indian rule in Kashmir.
Meanwhile Britain has urged India and Pakistan to show restraint amid fears the two nuclear powers are lurching towards an all-out battle over the disputed territory.
