Britain to convince US to resume military links with Indonesia
Indonesian defence minister Matori Abdul Jalil says Britain has offered to help convince the United States to restore military relations with his country.
Mr Jalil has returned to Indonesia after a 12-day foreign trip which included visits to Britain and the US, where he made the case for restoring military ties.
They were suspended in 1999 after pro-Jakarta militias went on a rampage in East Timor after its independence vote.
US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has called on Congress to ease military restrictions particulary after the September 11 attacks on the United States.
But some US officials are concerned Indonesia has not yet done enough to purge the armed forces of those guilty of human rights abuses.
