Rains hit drought stricken Taiwan
Torrential rain has brought some relief to Taiwan as the island suffers from one of its worst droughts in years.
The Central Weather Bureau says overnight rainfall brought by a monsoon front measured at least 100 millimetres in some areas of southern Taiwan,
The rain triggered a landslide and localised flooding and forced the temporary closure of several airports.
The government taskforce tackling the drought, says water supplies will soon return to normal in most of the country, but rains are scant in the northern region, which is hardest hit by the drought. The Taipei city government says water rationing will stay in place for now.
