Japan fails in plan to resume commercial whaling

Japan's bid to resume commercial whaling has been defeated at the International Whaling Commission

Tokyo correspondent Mark Simkin reports the I-W-C rejected Japan's proposed method of managing commercial whale hunts.

Japan proposed a revised management scheme that set out the parameters Tokyo wanted placed on commercial whaling. Among other things the plan would have abolished whale sanctuaries and allowed countries to immediately resume hunting. After debate the Japanese proposal was soundly defeated - 16 votes in favour, 25 against.
