New Zealand criticises Solomons on whaling vote
New Zealand's Conservation Minister Sandra Lee has attacked the Solomon Islands, among other countries, after a vote to support whaling quotas for indigenous Alaskans and Siberians failed to get the required majority at the International Whaling Commission meeting in Japan.
Ms Lee says she was "astounded" that Japan and its pro-whaling supporters from the Caribbean and the Pacific voted to block a quota for bowhead whales to meet the subsistence needs of the indigenous peoples of Alaska and Siberia.
She says even the pro-whaling nations of Norway, Russia and Denmark voted with New Zealand in favour of granting the indigenous quota.
She says there are now grave concerns the protein needs of the indigenous peoples of Siberia and Alaska have been put in jeopardy as a result of them being used as political footballs.
Ms Lee says countries like the Solomon Islands and Mongolia didn't seem to realised the seriousness of the impact their votes would have on the lives of indigenous communities.
