Prime Minister says India's patience is running out

The European Union's external affairs commissioner, Chris Patten says relations between India and Pakistan over Kashmir are "on a knife edge".

He said India's patience with Pakistani promises to rein in cross-border raids by Islamic militants is almost beyond breaking point.

Mr Patten made his comments after meeting India's foreign minister, Jaswant Singh.

Meanwhile, the Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has sent a letter to President George W Bush on the current standoff in Kashmir.

Simi Chakrabarti reports.

"According to a government official, Prime Minister Vajpayee is believed to have expressed India's concern and written that New Delhi's patience was running out. The letter protests against Pakistan's alleged cross-border terrorism in Kashmir. Meanwhile, European Union External Affairs Commissioner Chris Patten held high level discussions in New Delhi after first stopping off in Islamabad yesterday. Mr Patten asked Pakistan to fulfil its commitment to implement the United Nations resolutions against terrorism as well as President Pervez Musharraf's pledge to crackdown on insurgents."
