India's ruling coalition rejects resignation demands
India's multi-party coalition government has rejected demands for the resignation of Defence Minister George Fernandes, or any other minister, over an arms bribery scandal.
The rejection follows a meeting of all members of the ruling National Democratic Alliance, who voiced their confidence in the government of Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee.
Commerce Minister, Murasoli Maran says the meeting also decided the government would submit to any inquiry deemed fit by parliament.
The scandal erupted after journalists posed as arms dealers and captured senior politicians, civil servants and army officers on hidden cameras, apprently taking bribes.
The president of the BJP party which dominates the coalition, Bangaru Laxman, resigned on Tuesday and Mr Fernandes was reported to have offered his resignation but it was rejected by cabinet.
The scandal triggered uproar in parliament as opposition MPs stormed the floor of the house demanding the entire government stand down.
