Vietnam officials deny death protest against religious persecution
Officials in southern Vietnam are denying claims a follower of a Buddhist sect burnt herself to death to protest religious persecution.
The body of the 75-year old woman was found on the side of a deserted road in the Tan Hoi commune in the southern province of Vinh Long.
Police say they're treating the case as murder.
However, the Hoa Hao Buddhist Association based in the United States city of Maryland claim the woman burnt herself to death during a protest earlier this week by several hundred followers demanding greater religious freedom.
Human rights and religious freedom is a particularly sensitive issue for Hanoi at the moment as US threatens to stall trade agreements because of concerns over human rights and labour issues.
