India's population tops one-billion mark
The Indian government says the country's population topped the one billion mark on March 1st.
According to the provisional results of a census carried out once every decade, the country added about 181 million people between 1991 and 2001.
But the rate of population growth slowed during the last decade by 2.5-percent to 21-per cent over the previous decade.
The census which began on February 7, will serve as a guide for policy-makers worried about the country's population growth. Government officials said the census operation by some two million census workers covered even remote tribes.
India's official population is now one-point-zero-two-seven billion.
