UN human rights envoy to visit Burma for first time

The United Nations' newly appointed special human rights rapporteur on Burma, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, has been given permission to visit the country next month.

Mr Pinheiro's predecessor Rajsoomer Lallah, was never authorised by Burma's military regime to visit the country during his term in the post.

Mr Pinheiro will present reports to the Geneva-based UN Commission on Human Rights which then decides whether to take further action.

Burmese observers said the junta's decision to promptly allow Pinheiro into the country was a clear sign of the major changes that have taken place since October.
