Two dead in fresh violence on Borneo

At least two migrant settlers were killed and several settlers' houses torched in the latest ethnic violence on Indonesia's Borneo island.

The military said the first victim, a 22-year-old ethnic Malay, was killed by a mob of indigenous Dayak tribesmen in Pangkalan Bun, the main town of Kotawaringin Timur district.

Also yesterday, a Madurese man was hacked to death by another Dayak mob about 15 kilometres southeast of Pangkalan Bun.

Migrant settlers from Madura, an island off the coast of East Java, have been the main victims of a wave of ethnic violence in Indonesian Borneo since mid-February.
