East Timor's interim parliament seeks to clarify confusion
East Timor's interim parliament has called on independence leader Xanana Gusmao to clarify his position on the National Council.
Reports last week said Mr Gusmao, widely expected to be the first president of an independent East Timor, had quit the council citing infighting over a constitution for East Timor.
But latest reports indicate that while Mr Gusmao said he would quit as the council's speaker, he may not have resigned from the council itself.
Mr Gusmao, who is in the United States to deliver a lecture on genocide this week, was not available personally to clear up the confusion.
Earlier, chief of the U.N. Transitional Administration in East Timor, Sergio Vieira de Mello, said Nobel Peace laureate Jose Ramos-Horta would step down as the territory's foreign minister to take Gusmao's place on the National Council.
