Australia to build military training centre in East Timor
The head of the Australian Mission to East Timor, James Batley, and the commander of East Timor Defence Forces have lain the foundation stone for an Australian-funded project to build a training center for the East Timorese military.
The training center, which is due to be completed by June this year, will have a firing range, classrooms and sport facilities.
The commander of East Timor Defence Forces, Brigadier General Taur Matan Ruak, described it as an important contribution by the Australian government to help build East Timor's defence forces.
He says the East Timor military is expected to have two battalions by 2003.
