East Timor's UN peacekeepers boost security after attacks
United Nations peacekeepers have boosted security along East Timor's border with Indonesia after a series of attacks. A U-N peacekeeping spokesman, Australian army captain, John Liston, says border patrols have been increased after unidentified gunmen threw grenades and fired shots in five seperate clashes on Monday.
An East Timorese woman who was wounded in one attack died in a local hospital on Wednesday.
Captain Liston says U-N peacekeepers are preparing for any eventuality and ready to respond to any security threat now and up to the election.
Timorese will vote in a government on August 30th that will lead them to full independence when UN administration of the territory ends next year.
They last went to the polls in August 1999 for a referendum that overwhelmingly called for their homeland to end 24 years of Indonesian rule.
The result of the ballot triggered a wave of violence by pro-Indonesian militias which was only halted when peacekeepers arrived a month later.
