US officials in Hainan in southern China push for unrestricted contact

United States' officials on Hainan island in southern China are pushing for daily unrestricted contact with 24 American service personnel detained after their damaged spy plane landed in China last weekend.

And as Jane Hutcheon reports from the city of Haikou, there is increasing optimism in the U-S that the crew will soon be on their way home.

Despite high level pronouncements that the US must apologise before the 24 crew members are returned US Defence Attache Neiil Sealock said intense diplomatic efforts continue to secure their release. "Secretary Powell is working very hard in Washington consistently with meetings and ???? has been working virtually around the clock in Beijing. General Sealock also said the US delegation in Haikou was pushing for more daily contact with the crew. "We are working hard for unfettered daily access to the crew and we've asked to see them twice a day".
