US says spy plane row is starting to damage relations with China

In the United States, the Bush administration says China's continued detention of a US spy plane crew is starting to damage the relationship between the two countries.

From Washington, Michael Carey reports.

US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, says he believes the US and China are on the road to resolving the impasse over the detained US spy plane, but warned Beijing this morning the lack of resolution so far is already putting a strain on relations. 'The relationship is being damaged and the sooner we can bring this to a conclusion, we can halt the damage, not let things get any worse, and get back to broader equities that we should be talking to the Chinese about.' US officials have repeated their insistence that Washington won't apologise for the collision between its spy plane and a Chinese fighter jet. However, the White House says President Bush will respond to a letter from the wife of the missing Chinse pilot, offering his sympathy and repeating US regret that the incident occurred.
