US says no to apology to China over spy plane

The United States has again stressed that it has no intention of offering an apology to China regarding the collision last weekend of a US spy plane with a Chinese fighter jet.

A standoff continues with the 24 crew members of the US aircraft still in Chinese hands, and a Chinese fighter pilot missing and presumed dead.

China's Defence Minister has repeated calls for the US to apologise over the mid-air collision.

But US vice-president Dick Cheney says it won't happen.

The president has said clearly that we "regret the loss of a Chinese pilot as a result of this accident, but the notion that we should apologize for being in the international airspace, for example, is not something we can accept."
