Jiang Zemin begins Cuba visit
Chinese President Jiang Zemin has begun his second official visit to Cuba, seeking to build on increasingly close ties with the only Communist government in the Americas.
The visit comes just one day after the resolution of an 11-day standoff between Washington and Beijing over a US spy plane and crew, detained in China after a collision with a Chinese jet.
During the row, Cuban President Fidel Castro threw his unconditional support behind Beijing, demanding that Washington not "provoke" China and accusing the United States of displaying a "Cold War mentality".
On arrival in Cuba, President Jiang released a statement, saying China places great importance on its relations with Cuba and supports the Cuban people in their struggle to safeguard their sovereignty.
Cuba is the fifth stop on Jiang's 12-day tour of Latin America.
He has already visited Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil and heads to Venezuela Sunday before returning home on April 17.
