China says Japanese textbook revisions unacceptable
China says revisions of a Japanese high school textbook do not go far enough, accusing Tokyo of trying to cover up its history of wartime aggression.
A foreign ministry spokeswoman in Beijing says while there have been some amendments, the basic meaning of the textbook has not changed and remains unacceptable.
The textbook was compiled by the nationalist Japanese Society for History Textbook Revision -- a right-wing group that says current history text books are biased against Japan and too "masochistic" in acknowledging its wrongdoings in modern times.
Under pressure both at home and abroad, the Japanese government demanded the group make a total of 137 changes to the text which were approved last week.
But correspondents say the revised text books still avoid using the word invasion to describe Japan's colonial aggression in Korea and China and make no mention of the forced prostitution of tens of thousands of Asian women for Japanese troops.
