US spy plane technicians head home after inspection
A United States team that inspected a damaged spy plane in southern China has left after reporting that the stranded EP-3 could be repaired and flown out of Hainan island. The five-member team from contractor Lockheed Martin left Hainan's provincial capital Haikou at the end of their four-day stay.
The official Chinese newsagency Xinhua reported the two sides would continue their discussions to acheive a final settlement. The commander of US forces in the Pacific, Admiral Blair said the team will draw up a proposal for the Chinese to return the multi-million-dollar plane.
US officials said the technicians had assessed that the crippled plane could be repaired and flown off the Chinese military air base at Lingshui.
The aircraft, carrying sensitive espionage equipment, was seized on April 1 after it collided with a Chinese fighter jet and made an emergency landing at Lingshui.
