Madurese refugees evacuated from Borneo camps
More than 1,000 ethnic Madurese refugees have been evacuated from camps on Borneo island, in the wake of violence that erupted in the region last month.
Officials say on Saturday, as many as 198 refugee families were "quietly" moved out of camps in Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan province, to two new areas.
They say the refugees were moved for their own safety.
Officials have been trying to relocate almost 40-thousand refugees living in temporary shelters after violence against the refugees last month.
Angry Malay residents attacked and torched some of the centres on June 24 after a six-year-old boy died in an attempted robbery.
The attack sparked other clashes between Madurese refugees and Malay and indigenous Dayak residents which left at least four people dead.
Leaders of the Dayak and Malay communities then called for the refugees to leave Pontianak by Sunday.
