Indonesia's sacked police chief rejects job offer

Indonesia's sacked police chief has rejected an offer by President Abdurrahman Wahid to appoint him ambassador to Malaysia.

South East Asia correspondent Ginny Stein reports, the offer was the latest twist in the president's bid for political survival.

President Wahid suspended national police chief Suroyo Bimantoro last month, but until today the police chief has refused to leave his post. Today he formally rejected the president's new job offer. He offered President Wahid a million thanks, but said he could not accept the position. An apparently frustrated President Wahid today hit out at his political opponents accusing them of closing off all avenues to finding a compromise, to allow him to stay in power. Legislators are continuing to push for a special session of Parliament to be held next month which could lead to the President's impeachment. Ginny Stein, Jakarta.
