Wahid's fresh bid to strike deal with Opposition leaders in doubt
A fresh effort by Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid to strike a compromise with his political opponents before impeachment proceedings next month has stalled.
Aides for his main rival, Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri, say she will not take part in proposed weekend peace talks.
They say instead, she's travelling to neighbouring Singapore for a medical checkup.
Foreign Minister Alwi Shihab, who is one of Mr Wahid's closest aides, says the talks might be delayed if Ms Megawati does not attend.
The president had hoped to meet his estranged deputy, along with the leaders of other political parties tomorrow.
Past attempts by Mr Wahid to hold peace talks have repeatedly failed.
