Australian and Indonesian leaders to meet today in Jakarta

Australia's Prime Minister, John Howard, has begun a meeting with Indonesia's new President Megawati Sukarnoputri.

As Mark Bowling reports from Jakarta, Mr Howard says rather than dwelling on past differences, Australia will continue to offer to help Indonesia develop as a democracy:

In a short meeting yesterday, the Prime minister became the first foreign leader to meet Indonesia's new leader, President Megawati Sukarnoputri, sworn in three weeks ago. The priority Megawati gave to meeting Mr Howard is a clear sign she's willing to put behind her the bad blood over East Timor and forge a new relationship. Mr Howard has ruled out an early resumption of close links between the Australian and Indonesian military, which was severed after the 1999 East Timor crisis. Mark Bowling, Jakarta.
