Presidential decree on Aceh autonomy signed in Jakarta

Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri has signed a decree allowing special autonomy for the strife-torn province of Aceh.

The decision was announced by, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda.

He says the Megawati government hopes that Irian Jaya, also known as West Papua, will soon have similar laws.

Mr Hassan says Megawati's decree comes despite her past reservations about devolving power from Jakarta to the provinces.
