Australia's Prime Minister holds talks with Indonesia's President

In a sign that Australia's relationship with Indonesia is improving, Prime Minister John Howard has become the first International leader to hold talks with President Megawati Sukarnoputri in Jakarta.

As Mark Bowling reports from Jakarta, both leaders say the meeting has set a new tone for cooperation between their countries.

Mr Howard says discussions with Megawati were frank and the outcome of the meeting will contribute to a strong, positive but realistic relationship between neighbours. The two leaders discussed how Australia could help Indonesia out of economic crisis and reviewed the security situation in Aceh and Irian Jaya or West Papua province, where Indonesian troops separatists. They also discussed Timorese refugees, still living in Indonesian West Timor after fleeing their homeland. Mark Bowling, Jakarta.
