More negotiations between Nepal's government and Maoist rebels In Nepal, the government and the Maoist rebels have held peace talks aimed at ending a five year old rebellion which has claimed over 18-hundred lives. The talks which lasted for four hours ended with no apparent peace deal but the two sides decided to press ahead with negotiations. Top Maoist negotiator Krishna Bahadur Mahara described the talks as positive and said the rebels had formally presented their demands to the government. One of the demands is the abolition of Nepal's Consitutional monarch, which the government says it will not consider. However, ahead of the talks the government had agreed to release around 300 imprisoned rebels as a goodwill gesture. The peace effort initiated by Nepal's new Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has the support of the country's parliament. 31/08/01 13:46:53 | ABC Radio Australia News
